Bryony Lloyd is from Cheltenham in the middle earth. She studied Illustration at the University of Brighton, a place she describes as ‘a lovely place to live and work’. She is currently living in London.
Art and Things: Hi Bryony! So what started you as an artist?
Bryony Lloyd: I started drawing from the tender age of five. I just completely threw myself into art, it seemed to come naturally to me from a young age.
What are your favorite materials to work with?
Photoshop is very handy for laying things out and adjusting them, with no cost involved. I get a lot of pleasure out of making images by hand using different papers, card, raising bits with craft tabs.
Which albums are you playing this month?
Eagles of Death Metal has been my working music, Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion has been my dancing songs and Nouvelle Vague and Brigitte Bardot has been getting me romantic. Ohlala.
What’s your poison?
Whisky sours with a cherry in please.
Your favorite comedy quote?
Can I have two?
Sure.
“I am black…we’ve had some terrible summers.”
- Jill in Nighty Night
“I love you, in a way.”
- Alan Partridge

Last film you cried at?
The Piano is a beautiful film, I watch it quite alot and it never fails to move me. There’s that syndrome where people get morbidly overcome by beauty, isn’t there?….I get that with The Piano. Can’t wait to see Jane Campion’s new film.
What inspires you?
Interesting ladies. I find Brigitte Bardot’s way of life inspiring. Alan Aldridge. 60’s poster art and the age of aquarius. Mystics and mysteries. Kate Bush. Fellini. Old films and pictures……my lovely nan.
Do you have any other creative outlets?
I dance.
Nice. Which is your favorite city, or the most inspiring place you’ve visited?
Recently, Paris. I had never been before a few weeks ago and it was magical. Buttes Chaumont is the most beautiful park I’ve ever seen, with waterfalls and nouveau street lights. There was an art nouveau exhibition on at the Orsay that extended to 60’s and 70s psychedelia. Perfect.
Ah, lovely! So what sort of environment do you like to work in?
After months of berating myself for not having a studio, I’ve come to realization- Home studios are the best. Half of my bedroom is my studio and I love it. I love waking up early and just getting on with whatever I am doing. I have all my lovely things around me to keep me inspired. My housemates Sophie Kern and Rachel Lattimore are also illustrators, so it’s a good setup. ( Pictures coming to my blog soon!)
Yeah, we know Sophie! Awesome. Would you like to talk about a piece that you’re most proud of?
Yes, thank you. I like my portrait of Britt Ekland best. It was the first step in that direction. It was picked up by a lot of people and restored my own wavering confidence in my work again.
What’ve you got planned for the next few months?
Making things! Making 3D stuff and trying to exhibit it. I’m going to be some kind of crazy bionic making machine. I’ve got some collaborations lined up. I’ve got good tingly feelings about 2010.
Us too.
